SANFORD, N.C. — The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office has charged Anthony “Tony” Wayne Stewart, 23, with murder in the death of a 67-year-old Sanford man.

Investigators said they believe Stewart’s motive was to rob Josh Barnes Batts of Percocet pills. During the robbery on July 5, Stewart shot Batts, investigators said.

Stewart then took a large number of Percocet pills from Batts’ residence, according to authorities.

Stewart was charged with first-degree murder, possession with intent to sell and deliver a schedule II substance and robbery. He was being held in the Harnett County Detention Center with no bond.

He will have his first court appearance on Monday.
