CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — State House Speaker Joe Hackney underwent prostate surgery Friday morning, several weeks after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, his spokesman said.

The prostate cancer was found this fall during a biopsy prompted by elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in his blood, said spokesman Bill Holmes.

Doctors said they believe the 62-year-old Orange County Democrat shouldn't require additional cancer treatment.

"He's doing fine. His prognosis is excellent, and he is expected to make a full recovery," Dr. Eric Wallen, the UNC Hospitals urologic surgeon who performed the procedure, said in a statement.

Hackney is expected to be released from the hospital this weekend and will recuperate at home over the holidays, Holmes said.

Holmes said Hackney is encouraging all men to have regular prostate screenings to detect and treat any problems early. Prostate cancer strikes one in six men in the U.S.
