Grandfather charged after dogs kill Bladen infant

Posted September 21, 2011

— The grandfather of a 9-day-old infant mauled last month by dogs has been charged in her death, Bladen County authorities said Wednesday.

Nelson Ernest Camerino was arrested on Tuesday. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter.

A Bladen County grand jury indicted Camerino and the child's mother, Chelsea Briggs, 18, of 10140 N. College St. in Clarkton, on Friday during a special session. Briggs, who is also charged with involuntary manslaughter, was released on bond.

Addyson Paige Camerino was killed on Aug. 30 after several dogs in the home attacked her, authorities said. Five dogs were removed from the home, which authorities said was shared by Briggs, the baby, Briggs' parents, brothers and a tenant.

Camerino remains in custody under a $150,000 bond.

Well, for the grandfather to be charged as well means that there is more to this story than publicly known. The poor little baby girl is better off in the arms of the Lord it sounds like. Children should never be left alone with any type of animal. Things can happen.

Newborns and dogs should never be left together without CLOSE supervision. My friend has a daughter and a wonderful dog, and she tookmonths getting them used to each other. Even before the baby was born, they started adjusting the dogs to having to stay in other rooms so that they didn't feel like the baby took their space. Dogs and children take WORK and are a responsibility, if you can't take care of one, definately don't try to take care of both.

It doesn't matter the breed of the dog. It is how you treat the dogs you have. Pit, bulls are sweet dogs and only act aggressive if treated in a bad manner. Any dog acts aggressive if treated badly. It's a shame that the dogs are always blamed for something bad not the people that have them. Obviously the grandfather didn't keep a watchful eye on the child and ignored the child and the dogs. It's his fault the child died not the dogs fault. The grandfather needs to be convicted of murder not manslaughter. It's a shame he gets off for murder with a lesser charge than murder it self.

"Dogs and children DO mix. There are plenty of breeds of dogs that would be perfectly fine. My children grew up with dogs and have never been bitten by them."

I should have used the word infants. I'm sorry but I just can not see a dog with an infant. They are clueless as to what they are doing and could grab/aggravate a dog into doing something that it may or may not do. It is impossible to be with your infant EVERY minute of the day and it only takes that minute for something bad to happen.

ncouterbanks69: Stick to your guns, you are correct- New borns and dogs do not mix. If you have a way to seperate the dogs 24/7 then fine, if not, get rid of the dogs. It's not the breed of the dog or the temperment that causes them to tear babies apart. Talk to your Vet.

Leave the breeds out of it people. It's the owners. The point is why would responsible dog owners (regardless of breed) leave 5 dogs alone with a 9 day old infant? Why was the infant within reach of the dogs? Pack mentality and infants do not mix. Dogs and kids can absolutely mix. No question. People do it all the time and the kids live to tell about it. http://www.dogsandstorks.com/ It's called responsibility and these people are clearly not responsible. Not only do they need education on dog ownership but more importantly parenting.

I had a 2 year old black cat when my first child was born. I was 20 at the time. I had enough common sense back then to keep her away from the baby for fear that she may try to cuddle with him in his crib and accidently smother him. How irresponsible can a mother be to leave her NINE day old baby alone with a rot and a pit? let alone that many dogs in one house? It's common sense and for me, instinct. You don't leave a helpless infant alone with any kind of animal. I think there is def. more to this story than is being reported. Perhaps when the trial begins more will come out.

"IMO, they should be charged with murder in this case." - Southern Girl

Why? They should be charged with something, but murder? How about something that better fits the circumstances.
