Goodspeed Cancels Woody Allen Musical

A Connecticut theater well known for presenting musicals has canceled a planned production of “Bullets Over Broadway,” following a sexual abuse allegation against Woody Allen.

Goodspeed Musicals, the East Haddam, Connecticut, theater that gave “Annie” its start, said Thursday that it was dropping the musical adaptation of Allen’s 1994 film from its fall schedule.

“In light of the current dialogue on sexual harassment and misconduct, the author of ‘Bullets Over Broadway,’ Woody Allen, has come under increasing scrutiny,” Michael Gennaro, the executive director of Goodspeed, said in a statement. “Ongoing reports in the media have made this situation even more difficult and complicated and this led us to reconsider the appropriateness of producing the show.”

Allen’s daughter, Dylan Farrow, has said he molested her as a child. Allen has repeatedly denied the accusation.

The stage version of “Bullets Over Broadway,” a comedy about a playwright who hires a gangster’s girlfriend while trying to raise money for his show, was written by Allen, and ran for four months on Broadway in 2014.

Gennaro said the theater would replace that musical with another, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” which opened on Broadway in 2006.
