Goldsboro police scoop up suspected ice cream thief

Posted May 26, 2009

— Goldsboro police arrested a 16-year-old Tuesday and charged him with stealing ice cream from a truck.

Officer Jeff Beeken said he was patrolling in the 800 block of N. George St. when he saw a teen, later identified as Jodeci Rivers, walking with "an extremely large black bag on his back," according to police.

The bag contained a large amount of various types of ice cream, police said. When asked where he lives, Rivers said the "streets of Goldsboro," according to police.

Officer Gilstrap responded to the Pet Milk and Ice Cream Company at 1105 N. William St. and discovered that three truck locks had been cut off, police said. Dean Holmes, of Pet Milk and Ice Cream Company, said the ice cream could not be salvaged.

Police charged Rivers with felony breaking and entering; felony larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, possession of burglary tools, and misdemeanor damage to property.

He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $17,500 bond.

Maybe he wanted to be arrested. He needed to be thrown in the "cooler."

Exactly...he will be a convicted felon over some ice cream..read what I put....

"He probably took the ice cream because he was hungry."

He probably took the ice cream because he's a thief.
They always have some excuse to justify why they do what they do. I guess this is just another case of the white man keeping him down.

Now really, if you were hungry and had to comit a felony to eat would you cut the locks off an ice cream truck or steal something a little more nutritious?

Sad story. But if you think about it, if I was a homeless person, why not commit some sort of crime. You get a bed, a roof over your head, 3 meals a day - gotta be better than the streets.

Still - does not excuse what he did, although he may have had good intentions for doing it. Hopefully the milk co. will see the bigger picture and do something to help the family.

I happen to know this family. There are about 12 kids. He probably took the ice cream because he was hungry. (Not that I excuse this.) You just have to know the family. Always something going on with that crew. The kids are like doorsteps!

16 and living on "the streets" of Goldsboro? This is strange. Where is his family?

  • DowntownGirl May 26, 2009

I bet he was going to share with his friends...makes my heart melt! I bet he'll be out lickety split!?!

LoveSomeGolo... this is not about 'all this over some ice cream'. It's about damaging someone else's property and taking something that doesn't belong to you. Unfortunately Pet Milk apparently does not employ Mr. Doberman or Mr. Rottwiler.
