RALEIGH, N.C. — A portion of Glenwood Avenue inside the Beltline will be closed until late Saturday for a repaving operation.

Glenwood will be closed in both directions between the Five Points intersection and St. Mary's Street. The closure began at 5 a.m. and will last until 11 p.m.

Northbound traffic will be detoured onto Fairview Road, then right onto St. Mary's Street and back onto Glenwood. Southbound traffic will be detoured onto St. Mary's Street, then left onto Fairview Road and back onto Glenwood.

DOT officials said the closure is necessary for safety reasons, because there isn't enough room for both traffic and construction equipment. Crews will remove and replace layers of old pavement.

The work is part of a $1.7 million project to resurface Glenwood between Wade Avenue and Women's Club Drive. Drivers have complained of potholes along that stretch, and DOT officials have said the asphalt is coming loose from its concrete base.

Contractor CC Mangum Co. is on schedule to complete the project in June.
