RALEIGH, N.C. — Person Street and Blount Street were closed and buildings were evacuated for several hours Thursday afternoon in Raleigh as a result of a gas line break.

John Fanning with the Raleigh Fire Department said workers with an underground fiber network struck a gas line.

PSNC crews and members of the Raleigh Fire Department were at the scene, police said. About 20 people were forced to leave their apartments as authorities evacuated the area.

"The percentage of gas mixture in air is starting to get to flammable, explosive range, but the winds are helping dissipate that gas, so it's a fairly safe environment," Fanning said during the height of the incident.

All roads had reopened by Thursday evening.

Another gas main break was reported in Durham shortly before 3 p.m., prompting officials to close Rigsbee Avenue between Morgan and Chapel Hill streets, authorities said. Officials closed Morgan Street between Mangum and Foster streets shortly before 4 p.m. as crews continued their effort to repair the break. Shortly before 5 p.m., however, Morgan Street reopened but the stretch of Rigsbee remained closed.

No injuries have been reported from the leak, but authorities warned that the street could be closed for several hours while they worked to repair the break. It was not immediately clear how the incident happened.
