GARNER, N.C. — Garner officials selected a 15-year veteran of the Lynchburg, Va., police department as their new police chief.

Brandon V. Zuidema, 37, will replace Tom Moss, who is retiring on Oct. 31.

“We certainly have core responsibilities, in terms of public safety. But being effective is about collaborating and working with the community, having civic engagement, not just folks that are willing to step up when asked, but folks that want to volunteer, want to share ideas, and want to share more importantly, responsibility,” Zuidema said Monday.

Zuidema was among 67 job applicants.

He holds a master’s degree in sociology from Longwood University and bachelor’s degree from State University of New York in Geneseo in Sociology.

He will report to work on Dec. 1.
