GARNER, N.C. — Police investigating a domestic assault found more than $117,000 in a Garner motel room and an SUV, according to search warrants returned Wednesday.

As officers were arresting James Wright, 54, on Feb. 10 on a charge of assault on a female, they found he had about $14,000 in cash in his pocket, an affidavit for the search warrant states.

Wright refused a search of his Chevrolet Blazer but allowed officers to search his room at InnTowne Suites, 1491 U.S. Highway 70 West. A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to a bag in the room, where police found $89,590 in cash wrapped in plastic and socks, according to the affidavit.

Officers then obtained a search warrant for the Blazer, where another $13,495 was found.

No drugs were found in either search.
