CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — An autopsy failed to determine the cause of death of a Fuquay-Varina woman whose body was found in a muddy ditch in March.

Sandra Denise Thomas, 41, was found off Lawrence Street in Fuquay-Varina on March 29.

Her body had blunt force injuries and numerous puncture wounds, according to an autopsy report released Friday. The medical examiner said some of the injuries could have come from her being thrown from or dragged by a moving vehicle.

"The complexity of these injuries and the scene findings suggests that some other person or vehicle may have been involved with this death," the autopsy report states.

Still, the medical examiner noted that Thomas might have suffocated since she was face-down in the ditch or might have bled to death from her various injuries. The autopsy report also noted that she had cocaine and alcohol in her system when she died.

Fuquay-Varina police said they continue to follow leads in the case but have no suspects. Police have offered a reward for information leading to an arrest and ask that anyone who can assist in the investigation call Detective Sgt. Jeff Wenhart at 919-753-1006.
