Fuquay-Varina town official indicted on indecent liberties charges

— A Wake County grand jury has indicted Fuquay-Varina Town Commissioner Jim Abernethy on sex abuse charges.

Abernethy faces two counts of indecent liberties with a child. Though he was not in jail Wednesday as of 9 p.m. Wednesday, he could not be reached for comment.

Mayor John W. Byrne declined to discuss the charges.

No other information was released.

    yes, don't they always seem that way...just look at all those nice christians/teachers/[insert person of authority] abusing children, who'da thunk? these people get away with it because they fool everyone into thinking they're a 'stand up guy'

    I knew Jim many years ago, and am stunned by this. There's not much detail in this story.

    I know Jim and he seems like a stand up guy. I don't believe any of this is true, but if that is what the court has decided then so be it. There are always two sides to a story, and when one side is a spouse with a grudge, who knows how things will play out. I sincerely hope that Jim did nothing wrong, but if he did, then I'm glad the legal system worked for the kids sake.
