Moses Mathis, a Fayetteville man known for giving away bicycles to thousands of children for more than two decades, died Monday morning after a long illness, his wife said. 

<b>FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.</b> — Funeral arrangements have been set for a Fayetteville man who helped make Christmas a little brighter for underprivileged children.

Moses Mathis, known as "The Bicycle Man," died in his sleep at his home Monday morning after a long illness.

The 76-year-old spent 22 years collecting bicycles from the community and then fixing them up to distribute at Christmas to children whose families could not afford them.

A public viewing has been planned for 3 p.m. and a memorial service for 5 p.m. Sunday at Hood Memorial AME Zion Church, 2801 Rosehill Road in Fayetteville.

Mathis's funeral is planned for noon Monday at Cape Fear Conference Headquarters B, 10225 Fayetteville Road in Raeford.

Mathis's wife has said her husband's charity will continue.

Police say a woman was shot in the upper thigh while two men inside the home were arguing. EMS stabilized the woman and took her to ECU Health in Greenville. Both men suffered gunshot wounds during the altercation.
