Freight train derails in Wilson County

Authorities said three cars from a freight train derailed in Kenly around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. The train was traveling from Rocky Mount to Florence, S.C.

WILSON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities said three cars from a freight train derailed in Kenly around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. The train was traveling from Rocky Mount to Florence, S.C.

N.C. Highway 581 is blocked near the Newsome Mill Road intersection until 11:30 a.m.

Two of the train cars spilled coal and were taken off the rails, and a third car only had few wheels off the tracks, officials said.

Authorities said cleanup crews are on the scene. No injuries have been reported.
