FRANKLINTON, N.C. — Two Marine reservists were killed early Sunday when they crashed into a utility pole off West River Road in Franklin County, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The driver, Evan Alexander Tucker, 22, of Franklinton, lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road around 12:45 a.m., troopers said. He was trapped inside when the vehicle caught fire.

His passenger, Richard Wade Halford, 22, of Wake Forest, was found outside the vehicle. Both men were dead when before paramedics arrived.

No other vehicles were involved. Speed was a factor in the wreck, troopers said, but they were still trying to determine why Tucker lost control.
