CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Four juveniles have been charged with vandalizing the kitchen at Smith Middle School, including urinating in the ice machine, police said Tuesday.

Two of the juveniles were 12, one was 13 and one was 15, police said. Police couldn't confirm whether they were Smith students.

The vandalism occurred Dec. 15, and school officials said in a letter sent to school staff and parents of students that the ice machine was used for three days after that. Public health officials have said the tainted ice posed no health risk, but school officials said they planned to clean and disinfect the machine and other affected items before using them again.
