Four Oaks police vehicle crashes, flips during chase

A Johnston County Sheriff's Office deputy and a third vehicle was involved in the pursuit, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The chase started in Newton Grove, authorities said.

Troopers did not provide any further information about the crash Tuesday night.

Authorities were chasing a motorcycle when the officer's vehicle overturned in Ben Baker's driveway.

"It was a big parade of law enforcement when they came through here," he said.

The Four Oaks officer, whose name has not been released, tried to avoid another car on the road, Baker said.

"He swerved, hit the drain cauldron, and when he did he just laid over," he said. "I would have thought, by the impact, that it would roll down the highway, you know. It stopped on a dime."

The officer was able to escape the vehicle by kicking out a window. He was bleeding badly from the head, Baker said.

Moments later, the motorcycle that was being chased returned to the scene.

It's operator was apprehended in Danny Poston's yard.

"They got him, knocked him off the bike and handcuffed him," he said.

Investigators have not released the name or charges of the motorcycle driver.
