FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Three people on a school bus and the driver of another vehicle were injured Friday in a crash on Shaw Road near Fuji Drive in Fayetteville. The crash involved school bus No. 597.

One special needs student, an adult monitor and the bus driver were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with minor injuries, according to Theresa Perry, assistant superintendent of communications with Cumberland County Schools.

The driver of the other vehicle, whose name was not released, appeared to have more serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a waiting medical helicopter.

It appears the driver was speeding, going the opposite direction of the school bus and hit it head-on, Perry said. Police said the driver crossed the center line and over-corrected before the wreck.

Police cited high speed as a contributing factor in the wreck.

Neighbor Ace Kohn said he heard the crash.

"I heard a terrific boom, and I knew it was bad, and I ran outside and saw a school bus had been front-ended ... and I immediately dialed 911," he said.
