Four injured in Durham bus wreck

Posted October 26, 2009

— Four people were injured in a wreck Monday afternoon involving a DATA bus at the intersection of North Roxboro Road and Pacific Avenue in Durham.

The bus was traveling south on North Roxboro Road. When it attempted to make a right turn onto Pacific Avenue, it collided with a northbound vehicle, Durham Police Department spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

Four people on the bus suffered minor injuries – one of the four was taken to the hospital for treatment. Neither driver was injured.

Police said the bus driver will be cited for a safe movement violation.

It is no wonder. I am surprised it does not happen more often. I and my husband have been almost run off of the road several times on Gregson Street and on N. Roxboro road by DATA drivers changing lanes or turning. They don't look, they just move. My husband was run up on the curb at DSA because the driver went from a dead stop on the right side to the left turn lane with a signal, but did not look for traffic. They think they own the road.

I'm surprised that there were four persons on the bus, bet that included the driver.

I'm confused. The bus was headed south and tried to turn "RIGHT", but hit a car headed north? The map shows Pacific Ave. crossing west and east. Actually, the western portion is not a street, but a parking lot. I saw the emergency vehicles and the bus on Pacific Ave. when I came through on the way home from work. Either, the bus was headed south and tried to turn left, or the bus and the car were headed north and the bus swung wide to the left to turn right.
