FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Fort Bragg officials on Tuesday released the name of a soldier who was killed over the weekend in an apparent hit-and-run.

Pfc. Richard B. Powell, 20, was walking on post along Bragg Boulevard around 1:40 a.m. Saturday when he was struck and killed near Guber Road.

Powell, of Mobile, Ala., had recently arrived at Fort Bragg and was assigned to the 101st Chemical Company of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade, the military said.

Family members told WALA-TV in Mobile that Powell was walking to the grocery store when he was killed.

Authorities later apprehended Sarah A. Rogers, of Fayetteville, at a DWI checkpoint.

The military did not say if she faces charges in the case but did say that she remains a person of interest in the case.

Powell attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and the Supply Specialist Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Va.

His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
