Fort Bragg soldier found shot to death at hotel

An investigation was underway in Fayetteville after a Fort Bragg soldier was found dead in a hotel Saturday.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An investigation was underway in Fayetteville after a Fort Bragg soldier was found dead in a hotel Saturday.

The soldier's body was discovered at Quality Inn, 2035 Gillespie St., around noon "with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound," according to Fayetteville police.

The soldier was identified on Tuesday as First Sgt. James Patrick Watkins, 35, of California. He was with the Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps.
