Former School of Arts president dies

Dr. Robert Ward, a longtime president at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts died early Wednesday, friends said.

DURHAM, N.C. — Dr. Robert Ward, a longtime president at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts died early Wednesday, friends said.

Ward, a Pulitzer Prize winner for his opera, "The Crucible," retired in 1987 and was living in Durham.

Over the course of a career that spanned the 20th century, Ward composed dozens of operas, symphonies, concertos and other works.

He led the School of the Arts for two decades and was the Duke University Mary Duke Biddle Professor of Music. 

He was 96.
