APEX, N.C. — A former town manager and member of the Town Council was named Monday as Apex mayor.

William Sutton, who was appointed by a unanimous vote of the council, will fill the two years left on the term of former Mayor Keith Weatherly.

Weatherly, who served 18 years as mayor, resigned last month to take a lobbying position with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Sutton retired from local government in 2001 after serving for 20 years as a town manager, including the last nine of those in Apex. He was elected to the Apex Town Council in 2005 and served for four years.

“Bill’s combination of experience leading the town’s operations, as well as serving as an elected official, makes him an ideal fit to fill this term,” Councilwoman Denise Wilkie said in a statement.

Four people had applied to succeed Weatherly, officials said.

Sutton will be sworn in Feb. 18 during the next Town Council meeting.
