Former Cop Gets Jail Time for Stealing From Hispanic Drivers

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Steven Ray Hilsinger, 33, a fomer officer of the Washington, N.C., police department, was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison for illegal searches of Hispanic motorists.

On four occasions, Hilsinger stopped Hispanic motorists for minor traffic violations and stole the cash from their wallets in the course of verifiying their identity. His take was a total of $440. Two of his victims were undercover police officers, leading to his arrest.

Hilsinger will be required to return $220 and will serve probation after his prison sentence is up.
