RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh firefighters stood at intersections on Saturday, asking motorists to fill up their boots with change.
The firefighters kicked off a local effort in a national fund raiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a charity that provides services at Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and medical facilities in Winston-Salem and Charlotte.

Raleigh firefighters have participated in the Fill-the-Boot campaign for 10 years. In 2007, the department collected more than $12,000.

Since 1953, the nationwide effort by the International Association of Fire Fighters has raised over $320 million for MDA.
