HENDERSON, N.C. — A fire destroyed three boats and damaged a fourth late Thursday at Satterwhite Point Marina on Kerr Lake.

No injuries were reported, and authorities said Friday they haven't yet determined the cause of the fire.

"We're certainly interested to know exactly what happened," marina owner Catherine Hughes said.

The fire started on Allyn Broderick's houseboat at about 7:30 p.m.

"I was here a week ago Wednesday, and everything was fine. A week later, up in flames. I don't understand," Broderick said.

David Pearson said he was at the marina when the fire started, and he tried to put out the flames with a hose. But the fire was just too intense, he said, and the flames consumed his houseboat as well.

"It was just devastating. I don't know what I'm going to do. This was my life," Pearson said. "I basically lost everything."

Bill Moore's boat was burned by the flames but isn't a total loss.

"On my boat, its mainly cosmetic," Moore said. "The outside got scorched real bad. The curtains, some of the shades on the inside of the boat, were melted."

Hughes said she and her husband were at their Virginia home when they were notified of the fire.

"Vance County Fire & Rescue made a very fast response," she said. "The fire only spread to two other boats, so it was very contained to just three boats. We're just thankful for that quick response."

Despite the property damage, Moore and Broderick said they were grateful no one was hurt in the fire.

"We weren't on it [the boat] at the time, and nobody got hurt. So, we're all glad for that," Moore said.

"It's a good thing that we were here," Pearson said. "If no one was here, this whole place could have gone up."

Crews worked Friday to repair damage to one of the marina's docks, but Hughes said the marina was up and running.

"It's business as normal here today, and we're really thankful for that," she said. "It could be a really different day today if anybody had been hurt, so we are just so thankful that no one was hurt at all."
