ZEBULON, N.C. — A popular northern Johnston County convenience store located on NC Hwy 39 was heavily damaged in an early Monday morning fire.

The fire was reported at 2 a.m. at the Shop N' Go 39.

The privately-owned business is a main stay in this rural area of Johnston County. It was the only convenience store for miles for many neighbors.

Firefighters remain on the scene checking for and putting out any hotspots.

According to officials, part of the reason the fire was so hard to put out was because the structure was originally built in early 1960’s with a flat roof. Sometime later an A-line roof was added. Images from the scene show the store's roof sustained heavy damage.

The store was closed at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. Fortunately, owners say the business was insured.

There has been no word yet on what started the fire.
