Final Lane of Avent Ferry Reopened

Crews worked on the damaged roadway all day Thursday and resumed repairs at 7:30 a.m. Friday. The finished paving the final lane that was still shut down Friday afternoon.

Parts of the road at the intersection with Gorman Street were closed at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when the water main break sent 500,000 gallons of water spilling down Avent Ferry Road. The water pressure also caused parts of the roadway to buckle, officials said.

Repairs were required to 80 feet on one side of the street and about 100 feet on the other side.

Paving crews had to tear up the buckled asphalt, remove wet soil and fill the holes with new soil. They then had to put down a gravel-dirt mixture and lay new asphalt on top of that, officials said.
