Road Snacks, a website that ranks states and cities across the country, used a 2016 FBI report on crime data to name the ten riskiest cities to call home in the Tar Heel State, with one being the most dangerous.
Note: The FBI periodically releases crime statistics to the public but does not rank cities based on those numbers.
  1. Lumberton
  2. Oxford
  3. Kinston
  4. Laurinburg
  5. Forest City
  6. Wadesboro
  7. Henderson
  8. Goldsboro
  9. Roanoke Rapids
  10. Pineville

Analysts looked at two factors, violent crimes per capita and property crimes per capita, in all North Carolina cities with a population above 5,000.

Durham data was absent from Road Snacks' analysis. A City of Durham spokesman the city does submit data to the FBI, but a technical glitch in 2016 caused the city to miss the deadline for a few of the monthly submissions. Durham was included on the North Carolina SBI annual summary report for 2016.

According to Road Snack's findings, there were 393 violent crimes in Lumberton in 2016.

Kinston, one of the smallest cities on the list, saw 257 violent crimes between 2014 and 2016.

The same data was used to determine the 10 safest cities in North Carolina in 2016.

  2. Holly Springs
  3. Pinehurst
  4. Davidson
  5. Cary
  6. Apex
  7. Stallings
  8. Rolesville

  10. Waxhaw
Crime data for the previous year is released from the FBI in October of the year following it. Crime data from 2017 will be available in October 2018.
