Fayetteville woman charged in son's death

Posted April 4, 2011

— A Fayetteville woman is charged in the death of her 1-year-old child, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Malissa Yates, 24, of 6089 Lunar Drive, was arrested late Monday afternoon and charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

Yates was being held without bond in the Cumberland County Detention Center.

Investigators say Yates assaulted her son in July. The State Medical Examiner’s Office determined the child died of blunt force trauma to the head, chest and abdomen.

Yates will make her first court appearance on Tuesday.

Yates was charged with misdemeanor child abuse in November, according to state Department of Correction records.

TO: airbornemonty; They are in Govt positions. They get their check regardless. And they were probably investigating some mother that took away her teenagers cell phone priviledge for 1 week because of backtalking. I stop here before it goes into a rant.

This is so sad! If she didn't want her baby, she should have given him up for adoption and let him live........

She desereves life in prison, I hope they give it to her!

She is not a kid. She is 24 years old. You are suppose to have some common sense and decency about yourself. What could a 1 year old do to make someone that mad to want to hurt your own child. They better keep her segregated unless they don't want to see her anymore.

kids having kids it is crazy she knew she was not the mother type so why didn't she give the child to someone with real mothering skills, doesn't she know that in jail she is going to be a red bulls eye

The child protective service where were they when the child was first assaulted and why did they allow the child to be assaulted again?

I suppose they were doing their usual thing...NOTHING!

My question: "Yates was charged with misdemeanor child abuse in November" and "Investigators say Yates assaulted her son in July" Why in Gods name did she still have this child under her so called supervision. This is Ridiculous. That poor child suffered at the hand of his own mother (if she even deserves that title) Glad he can finally Rest In Peace. so unfortunate. Im all 4 Justice- Great Comment.

Bible lesson -- The Bible plainly says that "the 'rich man' lifted up his eyes where??? in hell" Also, in the book of Revelations we see that the spirits of saints long gone are asking God when will he avenge their wrongful treatment on earth. So the spiritual body will be connected to the spirits at the return of Christ. The spirit "to be absent from the body is to be [automatically] present with the Lord." This is true of this poor little toddler.

Mother(s)/Father(s) : Who do you people think you are??? There are so many people out here in this world today that do not have children, or can't have kids. And your bless to have one of gods children and you go and do something like this. This is SICK and I really don't have anything nice to say right now, but I got to watch what I write or it won't get posted. Were not suppose to judge one another but I HOPE SHE GETS EXACTLY WHAT SHE DESERVES, AND SOME! And she
