Fayetteville police officer charged with DWI

A Fayetteville police officer was charged with driving while impaired early Sunday in Wilmington, police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville police officer was charged with driving while impaired early Sunday in Wilmington, police said.

Kevin Smith, 32, who joined the Fayetteville Police Department in March 2008, was stopped by a Wilmington police officer shortly after 1 a.m. in the area of Market and 23rd streets.

He was arrested and placed in the New Hanover County jail.

The Fayetteville Police Department will place Smith on administrative leave while it conducts an internal investigation into the alleged crime.
