FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police said that an armed man tried to get officers to kill him, but no one was injured in the confrontation Thursday afternoon.

Officers were called out to Channing Drive in response to an attempted suicide shortly after 2 p.m., police said. Officers found a man outside a residence carrying a pistol.

The man pointed the pistol at the ground but yelled for police to shoot him. He eventually obeyed commands to lie down and drop the gun, but when officers approached him, he grabbed the gun again and struggled with them, police said.

During the struggle, the man fired one shot into the ground, police said. He was taken into custody without anyone being injured.

Police said they are considering whether to charge the man or order treatment for him.
