Fayetteville police find car in fatal hit-and-run

Jerry Williams, 59, was struck while walking on North Street near Brinkley Drive late Wednesday, and the vehicle that hit him drove away. Williams died Thursday night at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Investigators said they found a 2013 Hyundai Elantra believed to be involved in the hit-and-run after it was reported to the State Highway Patrol that the car was involved in a crash on Dunn Road.

Relatives of Williams told WRAL News that investigators said the Elantra was a rental car.

"Somebody out there, somebody somewhere knows what happened," said Williams' brother, Tyrone Williams. "We think someone should come forward and talk about what happened and tell their story and their side – what they saw and even what they did. I think this is a time to come forth and lay it out."

Police have a suspect in the case, but no charges had been filed as of Monday evening.

Williams, who served in the Army and Marines, was a migrant worker who loved farming and helping others, relatives said.

"He was always down in Benson doing that migrant work," said sister Mary Pereira, who traveled from Boston to Fayetteville upon hearing of his death.

Williams' funeral is set for 3 p.m. Sunday at New Bethel AME Zion Church, 6967 Amarillo Drive in Fayetteville.
