FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police Chief Tom Bergamine on Monday outlined his plans for fighting crime in Fayetteville.

Violent crime reports were up last year over 2007 levels. The number of murders was up 14 percent, rapes were up almost 30 percent and robberies were up 31 percent, according to Fayetteville Police Department statistics.

Bergamine called for a combination of using technology to identify hot spots of criminal activity and staffing to address that activity, expanding community watch groups and other partnerships and educating people to prevent crimes.
