Fayetteville nightclub loses liquor license after fatal shooting

A Fayetteville nightclub that was the scene of a robbery and fatal shooting on Aug. 30 lost its liquor license Saturday.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville nightclub that was the scene of a robbery and fatal shooting on Aug. 30 lost its liquor license Saturday.

Citing numerous violent acts and a need to protect the public, the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission revoked the license for Chief's 25 Plus, at 612 W. Rowan St.

Derrick Maurcie Morrisey, a 37-year-old Raeford man, died Aug. 30 when he was hit by a stray bullet during a robbery outside the club, according to police.

According to investigators, Morrisey was walking a woman to her car in the parking lot of the club when he happened upon a robbery. The robbers and victims exchanged gunfire, and Morrisey was shot in the chest and killed, police said.

The suspension takes effect immediately, according to the ABC Commission's news release.

"I'm exercising my responsibility and authority to suspend permits to sell alcohol at locations where our ABC Commission law enforcement partners have reported incidents of deadly violence," commission chairman James Gardner said in a statement. "The NC ABC Commission is taking a firm position on this very serious issue."

Fayetteville Assistant Police Chief Charles Kimble said in August that Chief's 25 Plus isn't known as a haven for crime, but according to affidavits released by the ABC Commission Saturday, another fatal shooting and stabbing happened at the club in 2013.

According to testimony by Fayetteville police, the shooting occurred Jan. 27 in a parking lot across the street from the club that is used for overflow parking. The stabbing occurred Feb. 3 during an attempted robbery outside the club, police said.

No arrests have been made in Morrisey's death. Fayetteville police on Saturday asked for the public's help in identifying the victim of the armed robbery that happened prior to Morrisey being shot.
