FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man who choked an acquaintance during an argument was stabbed by the woman after he tried to assault her a second time, Fayetteville police said.

Duriel Shaw, 34, of the 5700 block of Aftonshire Drive, is charged with assault by strangulation and assault inflicting serious injury in the presence of a minor. Shaw underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He will be transported to the Cumberland County jail upon his release.

Shaw was involved in a verbal altercation that became physical with Lashonda Generette, 28, of the 2300 block of Indian Creek Drive. While Generette was being strangled by Shaw, she was able to free herself, grab a knife, and warned Shaw to stay away from her, police said.

“Shaw ignored the commands and attempted to assault Generette again when he was stabbed by her,” police said in a statement. “During this altercation, a 7-year-old juvenile was present.”

The incident happened at about 3:22 a.m. Sunday on the 5700 block of Aftonshire Drive.
