— Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives arrested a Fayetteville man Wednesday night and charged him with engaging in sexually inappropriate behavior with a child.

Investigators said Tony Daren Vanord, 46, of 3069 Gillespie St., invited his 6-year-old victim into his home, which was a camper. The contact reportedly occurred between Jan. 20, 2003 and March 1, 2003.

Investigators said the victim did not tell anyone about the incident because Vanord’s camper was parked on property owned by the victim’s grandparents, and their lives had been threatened.

Authorities charged Vanord with taking indecent liberties with a child, crimes against nature and first-degree statutory sex offense.

He was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $30,000 secured bond. He was scheduled to make a first court appearance at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Detention Center Courtroom.

Those charged with crimes against children, the elderly, the disabled or animals should have a bond of no less than $100,000.

agree with all my heart! animals, disable, elderly and kids are often the subject of violence because they can't fight back. thats how animals get lumped in..can't speak up or fight back. so the cowards attack them and others who maybe weaker.

What makes you assume the victim is a 'she'?

  • childofNC Mar 19, 2009

If she was 6 when she was victimized, that would make her 12 now. Probably took a sex ed class in school and told someone. Maybe they touched on molestation and how it's not the victim's fault and not to listen to threats.

RB-I know we can all get attached to an animal, and we think some of our pets as part of our family,BUT how would you put them on the same value of life than a human being? Actually their lives are sometimes weighted more than a human being. Simply amazing....

"He was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $30,000 secured bond."

    NOT HIGH ENOUGH!!!

Those charged with crimes against children, the elderly, the disabled or animals should have a bond of no less than $100,000.

I know they're not considered guilty until proven innocent - that's the fault of our judicial system here in the states. In Europe and England, you're considered guilty until proven innocent. That protects the public which should be our first concern, especially when children are concerned.

    Praying for the child.

    God bless.
