FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police have arrested a Cross Creek Mall worker on charges that he groped a woman applying for a job this week.

A woman flagged down a Fayetteville officer on bike patrol at the mall on Friday to report the incident. She said a man who works at the mall claimed he was hiring her and took her to a back room to fill out additional paperwork on Tuesday.

Once in the room, the man began touching her inappropriately and assaulting her, police said. The woman said she was scared to report the incident originally but decided to come forward to prevent it from happening to others.

After reviewing surveillance video and other evidence in the case, police charged Jose Antonio Cruz, 34, of 2239 Wingate Road, with a second-degree sexual offense, sexual battery and assault on a female.

Cruz was being held under a $10,000 bond at the Cumberland County jail on Friday afternoon.
