FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police arrested a man Friday in the death of his 7-year-old grandson, who accidentally shot himself.

David Nathaniel Richardson, 52, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and failure to secure a firearm in connection with the death of his grandson, Jaylean Richardson.

Officers responded to the Colony Place Apartments complex, on Hyde Place, shortly after 4:15 p.m. Friday and determined that the boy was in a rear room of an apartment when a gunshot was heard.

Police said that Jaylean and other children were in a bedroom when the rifle was discovered and the boy was accidentally shot. David Richardson was home at the time.

The 7-year-old was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he later died.

According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting was accidental.

Richardson was being processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center and received a $6,000 secured bond.

The shooting was the second one in Cumberland County Friday that seriously wounded a boy.

Someone fired shots on Peele Street shortly before 3:30 a.m., and one of them went into a mobile home and struck 3-year-old Ahmad Daniels, who was asleep inside, authorities said. He was in critical condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Police said the two shootings aren't connected.
