Smithfield, N.C. — A father charged with intentionally injuring his 2-month-old son in 2013 pleaded no contest Wednesday to a charge of intentional child abuse inflicting serious injury.
Jonathan Jones was released on time served and will face 30 months of probation.
Jaxen Jones was put on life support after police found him unresponsive at his home on Caswell Street in Smithfield. He was on a ventilator for about a week and has been undergoing physical, occupational, developmental and speech therapy since that time.
Jaxen, now almost 2 years old, is in the care of an aunt and uncle, who are in the process of adopting the boy.
Jones, who agreed to the adoption, is not allowed to have contact with his son. His mother and father, Jaxen's grandparents, are still present in the child's life, family members say.
