Fatal wreck near Smithfield causes I-95 traffic delays

A single-vehicle fatal crash caused traffic delays Wednesday evening along Interstate 95, near Smithfield, Johnston County sheriff's deputies said.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A single-vehicle fatal crash caused traffic delays Wednesday evening along Interstate 95, near Smithfield, Johnston County sheriff's deputies said.

Driver Dusty Fowler, 34, of Smithfield, was killed when his vehicle ran off the road near mile-marker 97 at about 7:30 p.m., the state Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck an abandoned parked vehicle, then an embankment and a tree.

All northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for a short time after the wreck.
