CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Friends and family gathered Thursday at the Chapel Hill home where William Randolph Morris was killed during a powerful thunderstorm the night before.

The father of two, known as Randy, died when high winds sent a tree crashing down on him as he stood on his back porch.

Morris, 55, was a retired Navy commander who served in the Iraq war. His family described him as a faithful husband and loving dad.

The line of storms that moved quickly across the state also took the life of a Winston Salem man. Justin Cardwell died when a pine tree fell on his car. His passenger was injured but survived.
