RED SPRINGS, N.C. — A family brawl at a Hoke County home ended with two men stabbed and a woman punched in the face, according to Sheriff Hubert A. Peterkin.

Peterkin said the situation began Monday when a 78-year-old man stabbed a boyfriend of his 18-year-old granddaughter in the knee. The 18-year-old woman argued with her grandfather as he waved a knife around with young children inside the home at 1702 Balfour Road in Red Springs, the sheriff said.

Ricky Brooks, the woman's father and 78-year-old's son, came home and found out what had happened. Authorities said he yelled at the woman and hit her in the face at least twice.

The woman's brother, Jonathan Brooks, 21, joined the fight and stabbed his father in the torso with a pair of scissors, authorities said. He fled from the house and hid in nearby woods until detectives found him.

Jonathan Brooks confessed to stabbing his father and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injuries, Peterkin said. He was placed in the Hoke County Detention Center under a $20,000 secured bond.

Investigators determined that the other assaults were misdemeanor offenses, Peterkin said, and the family members didn't want to press charges, so none were filed.

Hoke County Child Protective Services was assessing the situation for the wellbeing of the young children in the home.
