RALEIGH, N.C. — A woman with a 20-year history of leading digital initiatives was named publisher of the Raleigh News & Observer on Tuesday.

Sara Glines takes over Sept. 26.

She comes to the N&O from Gannett Co., where she was president of the Atlantic Group, overseeing eight daily news organizations and some non-dailies.

“Sara has deep experience with digital media, raising the digital acumen of her sales teams, improving the digital orientation of her newsrooms and re-imagining legacy products,” said McClatchy president and CEO Patrick Talamantes. “Her leadership will be a huge asset to both The News & Observer and McClatchy.”

Glines, who has a son, daughter-in-law and new granddaughter in Holly Springs, said she was excited about the move to the Triangle.

“The Triangle is a growing and dynamic region,” said Glines. “The idea of being part of the leading news organization in this vibrant community is very compelling.”

Glines replaces Orage Quarles III, who retired in June after serving 16 years as publisher.
