SALISBURY, N.C. — A 27-year-old man who escaped from Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury early Monday was captured Tuesday a few miles from the prison, state Department of Public Safety officials said.

Jonathan Dixon, who was serving a maximum of seven years for multiple counts of breaking and entering and other charges, was found at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in a building on Auction Drive off Interstate 85.

Members of the prison's emergency response team were searching the area when they noticed a broken window at a local business. When they entered the building, authorities found Dixon. He surrendered without incident.

Authorities said Monday that Dixon, who has family living in and near Pitt County, could have been headed east after escaping.

Dixon will face charges for escape from prison as well as break-ins and burglaries he committed after escaping.

He was originally due to be released in June 2017.
