RALEIGH, N.C. — Actress Cybill Shepherd has dropped out of the North Carolina Theatre's production of "Hello Dolly" after spraining her ankle, the theatre company announced Monday.

In a press release, Shepherd said she studied for more than two months to play the title role. She was injured at her apartment complex when she missed the last step on a staircase and fell.

"I was in excellent shape both physically and mentally, and this was just one of those freakish things that happen in life. I’ve only missed two days of work in my 40-year career. I’m just grateful that I didn’t break my neck," Shepherd said.

Shepherd suffered a tibial plateau fracture and a severe ankle sprain.

The role of Dolly Gallagher Levi will now be played by Broadway veteran Jacquelyn Piro Donovan.

"Hello Dolly" runs May 7-14 at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh.
