Garner teen becomes 'Idol' finalist
Scotty McCreery, of Garner, was named a finalist on "American Idol" on Thursday night.
Posted — UpdatedThe 17-year-old Garner Magnet High School student earned the spot after performing "Letters From Home" by John Michael Montgomery during Tuesday's show.
McCreery is among 10 contestants headed to the finals after receiving the most viewer votes. Judges added three more contestants to the finals as "Wild Card" picks.
The 13 finalists will perform each week for America's votes.
McCreery's "Idol" journey began last year when he auditioned in Milwaukee singing Josh Turner's "Your Man" and Travis Tritt's "Put Some Drive in Your Country."
Another singer with a Triangle connection made the top 13. Naima Adedap, of Chicago, who performed with the Burning Coal Theatre Company in Raleigh this past December, also made the cut.
"Winning 'American Idol' would be great, but just to get into the industry and to be a part of the music industry and be in Nashville and sing with the greats – that's a dream," McCreery said during an interview with WRAL News last month.
