— Scotty McCreery, of Garner, was named a finalist on "American Idol" on Thursday night.

The 17-year-old Garner Magnet High School student earned the spot after performing "Letters From Home" by John Michael Montgomery during Tuesday's show.

McCreery is among 10 contestants headed to the finals after receiving the most viewer votes. Judges added three more contestants to the finals as "Wild Card" picks.

The 13 finalists will perform each week for America's votes.

McCreery's "Idol" journey began last year when he auditioned in Milwaukee singing Josh Turner's "Your Man" and Travis Tritt's "Put Some Drive in Your Country."

Another singer with a Triangle connection made the top 13. Naima Adedap, of Chicago, who performed with the Burning Coal Theatre Company in Raleigh this past December, also made the cut.

"Winning 'American Idol' would be great, but just to get into the industry and to be a part of the music industry and be in Nashville and sing with the greats – that's a dream," McCreery said during an interview with WRAL News last month.

"...but he won't last long in the show..." Top 13 out of how many thousands? What more do you people want? I'll think you'll find he is more versatile than you think. His HS chorale teacher believes he is. And she IS serious about her music - I can attest to that firsthand.

He can not probly sing no better than the rest who have been on that show. It would be great if they canceled American Idol. Its just a waste of airtime.

He's just great! Would love for him to sing a Trace Adkins "upbeat" song. I think he'd do really well with that. GO SCOTTY!!! We're all pulling for you here in the triangle!!!

I really think it is his "One Shining Moment", and he WILL walk away with it all. Good Luck Scotty.

Yeah the kid is talented and I'm happy for him but he is not American Idol material. The fact that he is from a good family and has good moral does not mean that he is versatile (which I don't think he is), that doesn't have anything to do with talent. He will get his 15 min of fame but he won't last long in the show and if he does... well, I will talk about it when that happens. Ah this comment doesn't have anything to do with jealousy, please!!! It's just an opinion.
