"Memphis: The Musical" opens at the Durham Performing Arts Center this week. To celebrate, the DPAC is hosting a barbecue taste-off before Thursday night's performance.

The friendly competition will pit North Carolina barbecue against the more western Memphis style.

Old North State BBQ, Melvin Backyard BBQ Pit and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit will offer $10 plates that feature both styles of barbecue from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the sidewalk of Vivian Street, directly in front of DPAC.

The event is open to the public. Guests with tickets for that night's performance will be able to enter the main lobby with their food beginning at 5:30 p.m. All three restaurants will offer regular menu options in addition to the special plates.

A percentage of the night's proceeds will benefit Durham-based nonprofit KidZNotes, which fights poverty and encourages positive decision making by instructing and engaging children in classical orchestral music.

"Memphis: The Musical" opened Tuesday night and runs through Sunday.
