ELM CITY, N.C. — A man and woman died Saturday night when they ran a stop sign and crashed their motorcycle into a car, authorities said Monday.

Motorcyclist Robert Wayne Underwood Jr., 36, of Wilson, and passenger Danyell Renee Sanders, 31, of Sharpsburg, were thrown from the motorcycle after the collision, which occurred at the intersection of East Langley Road and Bottoms Dairy Road shortly before 8:30 p.m.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla that they hit, Derick Tere Hinton, 40, of Tarboro, wasn't injured.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol estimates that the motorcycle was traveling at 60 to 70 mph before the wreck.

The crash remains under investigation.
