GREENVILLE, N.C. — A soccer player from East Carolina University was in good condition at WakeMed Wednesday recovering from a gunshot wound, authorities said.

Jessica Gail Swanson, 22, a fifth-year senior at ECU, was shot in the stomach when her boyfriend accidentally fired a gun while cleaning it, according to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office. Investigators are looking into the incident, and family members said they have no reason to suspect an ulterior motive.

William Hamilton, 21, was also hurt when his gun fired, his father told a Greenville newspaper. The bullet passed through his hand and hit Swanson, the sheriff's office said. He was treated for his injury and released.
